Silk doesn't forgive mistakes the way cotton does. The first few minutes after a spill matter more than anything you do afterward — and for most stains, the instinct to rub, scrub or reach for hot water is exactly what turns a treatable mark into a permanent one.
The One Rule That Matters Most
Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into silk's fibres and can damage the weave's natural sheen. Press a clean, dry cloth onto the stain to lift as much liquid as possible before it sets, working from the outside of the mark inward so it doesn't spread.
Wine Stains
- Blot immediately — don't pour water or soda on it, both can spread the stain across the weave.
- If you must do something at home, a cool (never hot) damp cloth blotted gently can help lift fresh wine.
- Do not use salt on silk. It works on some fabrics but can damage silk's fibres.
Turmeric & Oil Stains
Common with curry splashes and oil-based cooking, and genuinely tricky on silk — turmeric is a dye, not just a stain, and reacts badly to water and sunlight.
- Blot off any excess immediately; don't let it sit.
- Keep the garment out of direct sunlight until it's professionally cleaned — UV exposure sets turmeric's yellow pigment permanently.
- Never use regular detergent on it at home — it can fix the stain rather than lift it.
Ink Stains
Ink is one of the few stains where speed genuinely helps, but home remedies (rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover) are too harsh for silk and can strip colour along with the ink. Blot only, and get it to a professional within a day if possible.
Never iron a stained silk garment, even to "set" it faster. Heat permanently bonds most stains — including wine, turmeric and ink — into the fibre, making professional removal far harder or impossible.
When to Stop and Call a Professional
If the piece has zari work, embroidery, or is a saree you actually care about, home treatment is a gamble — get it professionally cleaned instead of risking it. We inspect the fabric and stain type before choosing a treatment, rather than using one generic process on everything.
